Daily Devotion: Psalm 57 – “Father Knows Best”

Scripture: Psalm 57

Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.

I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me.

Psalm 56 and 57 begin similarly but possess one glaring difference…perspective. Instead of focusing on the adversary, the psalmist cries out to the God above all adversity. Biblically speaking, there is nothing that comes into your life that doesn’t first come through a loving God’s hands. In life, we can become so focused on our circumstances that we forget our God has promised to work all situations to our good. The miracles performed in Scripture were not mere more party tricks to draw a crowd. They provided proof that there was not one area of life that God wasn’t supreme. In my life, I have consistently learned more about His love for me in the storm rather than by the storm being removed. I heard a pastor once say that if you saw life from the perspective that God sees life, you would asked for exactly what God has allowed. This even includes the times God didn’t remove the storm but rather walked with you through them.

Is your “go to” response to life’s difficult situations to “cry about them” or “to cry out to the one above them”?

Lord, your Word and your people testify to your faithfulness in all of life’s situations. Father, help us to keep our eyes on you, trusting that you know and will always do what’s best. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
